Introduction

This is a new blog brought about by the lack of reports and apparent lack of places to go for bird watching in the NE region coupled with the commonly held believe that "there are NO birds in Isan". This statement is wrong and we out to find them.

This is a totally non-profit blog by your authors Mark Hogarth and Paul Farrell who live in and have local knowledge of the area, but we need your support as its a big area to cover!!

Head for the town of Ban La Han in the South East of the lake and then drive along the embankment counter clockwise.

STAYING THERE

You are on your own, we have never stayed there and so cannot really recommend any hotels and there are

BIRDING HIGHLIGHTS

Driving counter clockwise along the embankment  from Ban La Han, you will first pass a fish farm on your left, Osprey is commonly over this area with Brahminy kite. Look in the lillies on the main lake for ducks hiding among the Lesser Whistling and Garganey. Long tailed Shrike seem very common compared to other locations in Thailand. February 2016 saw a flock of 170 Glossy Ibis on the Eastern shores.

Be warned the road on the northern bank is treacherous with bad pot holes and you will need to get out of the car to negotiate on a number of areas are fine. This is in the cool season for water/visiting, i wouldn't attempt a wet season visit unless you really know the area.
