Introduction

This is a new blog brought about by the lack of reports and apparent lack of places to go for bird watching in the NE region coupled with the commonly held believe that "there are NO birds in Isan". This statement is wrong and we out to find them.

This is a totally non-profit blog by your authors Mark Hogarth and Paul Farrell who live in and have local knowledge of the area, but we need your support as its a big area to cover!!

Chonnabot Wetlands / Kaeng Lawaa, Khon Kaen Province

INTRODUCTION

Chonnabot Wetlands is a generic term covering wetlands in the Greater Chonnabot region of Khon Kaen Province. The area covered stretches from Ban Phai in the East to Mancha Khiri in the West and encompasses 3 wetland areas, which are all flood plains for the River Chi which flows out from the Southern end of Phu Khieo Wildlife Santuary.

Kaeng Lawaa is the biggest and arguably the most productive for generally wetland and plains type birds, it has some protection from the WWF.

Kong Kaeo lies just behind the town of Chonnabot. The area has suffered from drainage issues and mist netting trapping of marsh birds which can unfortunately be seen for sale in Chonnabot Market. Birds seen here include Greater-painted Snipe and Bright-headed Cisticola.

Kut Khao is the most Westerly wetland area starting just to the East of the town of Mancha Khiri.
